Over 1,000% Increase in Chinese Apprehensions at U.S. Southwest Border

More than 11,000 Chinese illegal immigrants have entered the United States since June 2023.

QUICK FACTS:
  • More than 24,000 Chinese illegal immigrants have been apprehended at the Southwest border during fiscal year 2023.
  • The number is a 1,115% increase from last year when only 1,987 Chinese nationals were apprehended.
  • In 2021, Border Patrol apprehended a mere 342 Chinese migrants.
  • According to a source within Border Patrol, 80% of Chinese migrants are single adults, adding that there is little information pointing to a purpose behind entry.
  • Dr. Kenneth Allard, a retired Army Colonel and former Dean of Students at the National War College, voiced concern that the migrants are exploiting weak border policies.
  • “It’s obvious [Biden] is not entirely in control at present, China realizes that as well,” Allard said.
  • In June, Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) expressed her unease about the thousands of Chinese apprehensions, tweeting, “Imagine how many [Chinese migrants] have evaded apprehension, and why are they trying to sneak into the country?”
CHINESE IMMIGRANTS POTENTIAL SECURITY THREAT:
  • The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believes the thousands of Chinese migrants may present a security threat, as those loyal to the CCP are likely exploiting the weakness of America’s borders and compromising national security.
  • “The counterintelligence and economic espionage efforts emanating from the government of China and the Chinese Communist Party are a grave threat to the economic well-being and democratic values of the United States,” a statement from the FBI’s website reads.
  • While the agency emphasized that the individual migrants may not be a threat, the lack of intelligence is a reason for concern, given that Border Patrol has been unable to distinguish economic migrants from those loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
  • “To be clear, the adversary is not the Chinese people or people of Chinese descent or heritage,” the FBI’s statement on China adds. “The threat comes from the programs and policies pursued by an authoritarian government.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Less than 1% of the 2.1 million illegal immigrants at the Southern border since January 20, 2021 have gone through an immigration court hearing.
  • The finding recorded in a House Judiciary Committee report challenges the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) assertions that the “southwest border is closed and illegal aliens are removed from the country quickly.”
  • “These data contradict Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas’s statements that the southwest border is closed and that illegal aliens are ‘quickly’ removed,” the report stated. “Instead, with more than 99 percent of illegal aliens staying inside the United States after being released by the Biden administration, there is virtually no enforcement of our immigration laws.”
