Residents of Mooresville, North Carolina, voiced their concerns over a proposed Islamic Center in the city.
Many residents spoke in opposition to the development on religious grounds, while one resident said Islam is an “evil ideology” and another described it as “a political regime with the ultimate goal of takeover in regions and nations,” FOX 8 reports.
“It is not Islamophobic or racist or white nationalist to want to protect our everyday way of life,” one individual said. Another noted, “Examine closely whether the building of this mosque is right for this community; I personally say no to Sharia Law and this Muslim Center.”
The site for the proposed development has been owned by the Islamic Center of Lake Norman since 2019. The group said in a statement, “We follow the same laws and regulations as every other community, and the project is not expected to significantly affect traffic. Our members include business owners, physicians, pharmacists, engineers, and other local professionals. We are your neighbors and an active part of the Mooresville community. And we hope we can all connect better as neighbors.”
Similarly, a proposed conversion of what was formerly a Catholic boarding school into a Muslim boarding school for boys is facing pushback in Long Island. “The proposed use by the new property owner is far more intensive than what is appropriate for a quiet residential neighborhood,” said Islip resident Kevin Colgan, who also leads the anti-boarding school movement in the area, as per the New York Post. “This is about protecting the integrity of our zoning laws — not opposing any individual or organization — zoning laws exist to preserve the character, integrity, and quality of life within our neighborhoods while ensuring that land uses are appropriate for their surroundings.”
