California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) will travel to South Carolina to meet with “communities that have too often been overlooked by Republicans in power,” the state’s Democratic Party announced.
“Governor Newsom leads the largest economy in America and the fourth largest in the world, and he’s coming to meet folks in towns that have been hollowed out by decades of Republican control,” said South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain. “This is about building partnerships, uplifting communities, and showing rural voters they aren’t forgotten.”
“Our strategy isn’t about chasing cable news coverage, it’s about showing up and building trust, town by town, county by county, that is our path back to power,” Spain added. “We’re proud of the gains we are making but we’re even more focused on what’s ahead.”
Newsom will visit what the party said are “some of the most economically challenged and environmentally vulnerable rural counties in South Carolina,” including the areas of Marion, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Laurens, Pickens, Oconee, Kershaw, and Florence.
The state’s Democratic Party claimed that Republican leaders have “failed to build a resilient, inclusive economy that works for everyone.”
The news release added that Newsom “delivered real results for working families in rural communities” in California, adding that his alleged record “shows what’s possible when leaders invest in working families.”
Sources familiar with the travels denied that Newsom is preparing for a presidential run, and is instead focused on assisting Democrats in efforts to reclaim the House of Representatives in 2026. One of Newsom’s senior political advisors, Lindsey Cobia, said the governor is “sounding the alarm about how rural families and communities requesting disaster relief are being left behind by the Trump administration,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
