Elon Musk announced that Starlink internet would be available for free in all areas impacted by Hurricane Helene.
“We are making a system update to allow all Starlinks in the affected areas to work, regardless of payment,” Musk wrote on X Tuesday night. “Software update hopefully completed tonight. Tomorrow at the latest.”
Former President Donald Trump thanked Musk for his effort.
“Elon immediately got involved,” Trump said. “And we have the most incredible – that they did in one day – they got tremendous communication.”
“I want to thank Elon Musk for what he’s done in North Carolina,” he added. “A little bit [of] help in Georgia, too, where they had some areas that had a hard time with communication. He hooked it up with the satellites, which he feels very confident in doing.”
Earlier this week, FEMA announced that it would be installing Starlink systems.
“Today, FEMA will install 30 Starlink receivers in western North Carolina to provide immediate connectivity for those in greatest need,” Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall told reporters on September 30.
