Multiple Nations at U.N. Securities Council Offered Concern About U.S.-Funded Bio-labs

Multiple nations are open to hearing more about Russian claims of US bio-lab activities around the world.

QUICK FACTS:
  • A Friday meeting of the United Nations Securities Council saw multiple nations looking for answers to whether the United States is funding illegal bio-labs outside of its borders.
  • These questions were largely prompted when Russia and China doubled down on their claims that the United States is researching bioweapons research in “bio-labs” across war-torn Ukraine, according to Fox News.
  • The Kremlin-aligned media outlet RIA Novosti created their reporter earlier in the month, prompting the council to meet and attempt to get to the bottom of the claims.
THE COUNCIL’S CONCERNS FROM FRIDAY’S MEETING:
  • The Economic Times of India made it clear that they believe it’s important the convention get to the bottom of the biological and toxic weapon accusations.
  • During the UN Security Council meeting on Friday, India pointed to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), stressing that any matter relating to obligations under the convention should be addressed through consultations and cooperation between the parties concerned.
  • Representatives for Albania, Ireland, the United States, France, the UK and Norway all pushed back against the Russian accusation, calling it disinformation.
BACKGROUND:
  • The United Nation’s official publication claimed that the disarmament affairs chief had explained to the security council they were “not aware of any biological weapons programme in Ukraine.”
  • Fox News’ report also highlighted the accusations from Russia’s Defense Ministry, namely that the U.S. spent $200 million on Ukrainian labs to create a “bioweapons program.”
