A shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, left at least four people dead and about 30 others injured.
The suspect is in custody.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said it will take “multiple days for us to get answers as to what happened and why this happened,” adding, “What you see behind us is evil.”
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in a statement that he has “directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”
“We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”
Democrats have issued calls for gun control following the tragic event.
“We continue to call on Congress to do something, to do something,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “We need universal background checks, we need to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, require safe storage of firearms, invest in violence prevention programs, and pass a national red flag law.”
This is a developing story.
