Muhammad made the list of top ten boy names in New York City. The name tied with Michael for the 9th most popular baby boy name in 2023.
The release from the New York City Health Department noted that Muhammad “rose to the top for the first time.” Dylan was also a new addition to the top ten list. The leading names were Emma for girls and Liam for boys.
A total of 98,389 babies were born in New York in 2023. The greatest number of babies were born in Manhattan, with 39,484, followed by Brooklyn, with 22,297. Queens had 20,148 babies born in 2023, the Bronx had 10,613, and Statin Island had 5,847.
Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse said of the list, “Our youngest New Yorkers are what make our city so special. We welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah, and all the other newborns to New York. With your presence, our city is a more joyful, brighter place for the new year and beyond.”
Muhammad also became the most popular name in the United Kingdom, according to data released by the Office of National Statistics. Muhammad was the second most popular boy name in 2022 and has been on top charts Since 2016. More than 4,600 boys were named Muhammad in 2023, almost 500 more than in 2022. The names Noah and Oliver were the second and third most popular.
The name, using the spelling Mohammed, first appeared on Britain’s top 100 rankings in 1924, rising in the 1960s.
