Joe Scarborough, presenter of MSNBC, stated on Thursday that the Biden campaign feels that the mounting calls for his former vice president to withdraw from the 2024 race are coming from former President Obama.
“One thing that we do have to underline here — just so viewers can follow what’s going on behind the scenes — is the Biden campaign and many Democratic officials do believe that Barack Obama is quietly working behind the scenes to orchestrate this,” Scarborough said.
Biden is “deeply resentful of his treatment under not only the Obama staff but also the way he was pushed aside for Hillary Clinton” in 2016, Scarborough continued during Thursday’s episode.
The co-host and wife of Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, said, “I think Barack Obama has a lot of influence, and there’s a lot there.”
After his weak debate performance two weeks ago, Biden is facing calls to withdraw from the race and growing doubts about his mental stability and capacity to overcome former President Trump.
In the aftermath of the debate, some of Biden’s most outspoken detractors have been former Obama advisers.
While Scarborough has stood up for the president against calls to step down, Biden has stated that he plans to stay in.
A well-known supporter of both Obama and Biden, actor George Clooney, wrote an opinion piece in The New York Times on Wednesday urging the president to resign.
Clooney and Obama supposedly spoke about the opinion piece beforehand, but the former president is said to have neither urged nor discouraged the actor from criticizing Biden.
As a frequent viewer of MSNBC’s popular morning talk show “Morning Joe,” Biden called in on Monday to defend himself against his left-wing detractors.
