Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Faces Scrutiny Over Abortion Vote Reversal

As a member of Congress, Tim Walz voted against a proposal requiring all infants who survive abortion attempts to receive immediate medical attention, as per a report by The Pulse. Despite initially supporting the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act in 2018, Walz later reached out to then-House Speaker Paul Ryan to retract his vote, admitting to mistakenly voting in favor.

Upon taking office as Minnesota’s governor in 2019, Walz annulled previous statutes mandating the provision of necessary care to ensure the survival and health of newborns following unsuccessful abortion attempts.

This move also eliminated the obligation for abortion providers to document instances where infants survived abortion procedures. Minnesota recorded three such cases in 2019—with two infants being left to die and one receiving solely palliative care. In 2021, the health department noted five incidents, all ending in the infants’ deaths.

During a recent debate, former President Trump criticized Harris and Walz for their stance on late-term abortion. Trump accused them of endorsing the termination of pregnancies up to, and even post, birth, stating, “[Harris’] vice presidential pick says abortion in the ninth month is absolutely fine,” and added that Walz approves of infanticide, which Trump firmly opposed.

However, the Minneapolis Star Tribune clarified that Walz, who advocates for expansive abortion access, has never publicly supported ninth-month abortions or the killing of newborns post-birth. Last year, Walz signed a law positioning Minnesota among a handful of locales that permit abortions at any stage of pregnancy without gestational age restrictions.
