House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), announced that congressional Republicans have been preparing an ambitious legislative agenda in anticipation of a potential Trump victory in 2024. Speaking on Newsmax’s special election coverage, Johnson revealed that GOP lawmakers have meticulously planned for a “very aggressive” first 100 days, aiming to hit the ground running should Republicans secure control of the White House and Congress.
Reflecting on lessons learned from 2017, Johnson noted that Republicans were unprepared when Donald Trump won his first term, resulting in months of lost time. Johnson noted that 2½ to 3 months were “wasted” because “the people in charge thought that Hillary [Clinton] was going to win.” This time, however, he says Republicans have coordinated across both chambers for a full year to design a playbook for a unified conservative agenda.
“So we’ve been preparing for a year now, very methodically. We didn’t put the cart before the horse, but we anticipated that we might well have a win, the trifecta tonight, the White House, the Senate, and the House,” Johnson shared with Newsmax during their ‘Vote For America’ election coverage.
“And if so, as I’ve told President Trump so many times, I genuinely believe that he could be the most consequential president of the modern era and our Congress, by extension, because we have to fix everything. But to do that, you got to have — let me use my football metaphor — a well-designed playbook that’s carefully prepared, and then you’ve got to be able to execute the plays with precision beginning on Day 1.
Johnson went onto add that, “The Senate and House Republicans working together for a year to design that playbook. When the head coach, in my metaphor, is elected, President Trump, and when they hand us the football in January … we’ll sit down, and we’ll lay out that playbook together. He knows about it, of course, and we’ll determine which plays to call, and we’ll come right out of the gates.
“It will be a very aggressive first 100 days agenda.”
This extensive planning hinges on the GOP winning what Johnson termed a “trifecta” in the 2024 elections—the White House, the Senate, and the House. Currently, the GOP is on track to do just that with Republicans already having secured the White House and Senate. Johnson emphasized that if Trump wins, Republicans will work closely with him to prioritize key agenda items and launch initiatives swiftly.
