The Daily Beast has retracted an article that falsely linked First Lady Melania Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, following a legal challenge from her attorney. The outlet admitted in an editor’s note Wednesday that the story—based on unverified claims from author Michael Wolff—was removed after a review of its headline and framing.
The article, originally titled “Melania Trump ‘Very Involved’ in Epstein Scandal: Author”, echoed comments Wolff made on a Daily Beast podcast. The piece and its headline no longer appear on the site or through Apple News.
“After this story was published, The Beast received a letter from First Lady Melania Trump’s attorney challenging the headline and framing of the article,” the note stated. “After reviewing the matter, the Beast has taken down the article and apologizes for any confusion or misunderstanding.”
Wolff, a controversial figure known for publishing sensational claims about President Trump and his family, alleged that Melania was “very involved” in Epstein’s circle through ID Models founder Paolo Zampolli. He claimed Epstein introduced Melania to Donald Trump and alleged their first encounter occurred on Epstein’s private jet.
Despite lacking evidence, Wolff speculated on Melania’s connection to what he described as a “culture of models of indeterminant age.” These remarks were made during a podcast interview now available on YouTube.
The retraction underscores growing scrutiny of media outlets that promote unfounded claims under the guise of journalism. Legal counsel for Melania Trump acted swiftly, prompting the Daily Beast to pull the content and issue a rare public apology.
The podcast episode remains live, but The Daily Beast’s formal withdrawal suggests the publication acknowledges the legal and ethical risks of propagating unverified accusations about the former First Lady.
