New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was spotted maskless during an indoor Mardi Gras event, just weeks after reinstating a city-wide mask mandate.
QUICK FACTS:
- Cantrell, who put back in place a mask mandate for the city of New Orleans until March 1, was spotted in multiple videos posted online not wearing a facial covering, Fox News reported.
- The videos showed Cantrell and two other women singing karaoke without masks at the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Ball on Feb. 18.
- After the incident was met with heavy criticism, every video taken at the ball was deleted before Monday morning.
ATTORNEY LAURA RODRIGUE ON THE LAWSUIT AGAINST THE MAYORS MASK MANDATE:
“The people of Louisiana have had enough. We certainly hope that the court will stand up for our children, our families and our businesses.”
BACKGROUND:
- In early Feb., the Louisiana Supreme Court denied requests for an expedited hearing on a lawsuit challenging the rules and a temporary restraining order.
- More than 100 individuals opposed to the mandates sued Cantrell, the New Orleans Health Department, and the agency’s leader Dr. Jennifer Avegno, claiming the government was far overreaching their authoritative powers.
- The lawsuit argued that the plaintiffs “Endured nearly two years of unprecedented executive control during the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a temporary means to protect the community from unknown risks has turned into perpetual, unlawful overreach.”
- The mandate will now extend through the end of Mardi Gras.
