Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh announced a mayoral campaign, highlighting policies that are similar to those pushed by New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani.
“My name is Omar Fateh, and I’m running for Minneapolis Mayor because for working people, it’s getting harder to build our lives in this city we love,” Fateh said in a social media statement. “To make an affordable Minneapolis that works for everyone, we need a Mayor that works as hard as we do. I’m ready to get to work.”
Fateh pledged to “build a Minneapolis that working people can afford to call home,” protect the city from a “hostile White House,” and “diversify the city’s public safety response.”
He further described his plans to increase the minimum wage to $20 by 2028, pass legislation to stabilize rent to “stop price gouging,” and incentivize new construction.
“Protecting all of our communities from Donald Trump means not letting MPD interact with ICE,” Fateh said, “whether it’s for an immigration raid or not.” He went on to declare that the city’s mayor must “stand up to Donald Trump.”
Fateh has voiced support for Mamdani’s campaign, calling Mamdani his “friend” and “fellow [Democratic Socialists of America] member.”
Like Fateh, Mamdani has launched an effort to raise New York City’s minimum wage, confront ICE, and freeze rent prices.
Following Mamdani’s June mayoral primary win, leftists chanted “globalize the intifada,” a message that the nominee refused to condemn. When asked about the phrase, Mamdani said, “That is not language I use,” avoiding a direct answer. He claimed his campaign is grounded in “human rights” and said he seeks “freedom, justice and safety” for both Israelis and Palestinians.
