- CNN reported that “one of the sad facts about anti-Black racism is that Black people…are not immune to its pernicious effects,” saying that racist ideas “infiltrate Black minds” and lead to “self-hate.”
- Nylah Burton of The Independent claimed the incident reveals systemic racism within police forces “no matter what their own racial background.”

- Representative Clay Higgins (R-LA) said that the Democrats’ push for defunding the police due to alleged systemic racism resulted in crime spikes across the United States.
- Higgins cited Seattle and New York City as two of the prominent centers of crime spikes, coincidently the two cities leading the “Defund the Police” movement.
- Fox News reported that New York City saw a 40% increase in crime in 2022 compared to 2021.
- In September 2022, House Democrats passed police funding bills.
- Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) said, “The bottom line is that you can’t cut it or defund your way to safer communities and better police departments,” adding, “It’s about investing to protect. We must always have the backs of those who risked their lives every day to protect us.”
BACKGROUND:
- Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis attempted to cover child sex crimes during her time with the Atlanta Police Department.
- Chief Davis, whose department is now embroiled in controversy over the death of Tyre Nichols, was fired from Atlanta police “for her alleged involvement in a botched sex crimes investigation into the husband of an Atlanta police sergeant.”
- Two detectives stated Davis told them not to investigate Terrill Marion “TC” Crane after police found sexually explicit photos of Crane with minor girls.
