Leftist Claudia Sheinbaum Elected President of Mexico

Mexico has elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“Long live democracy!” Sheinbaum wrote on X, according to a translation.

The Associated Press described Sheinbaum as a “lifelong leftist.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, then-Mayor of Mexico City Sheinbaum “set limits on businesses’ hours and capacity when the virus was rapidly spreading, even though López Obrador wanted to avoid any measures that would hurt the economy,” the outlet reported.

Sheibaum also “publicly wore protective masks and urged social distancing while the president was still lunging into crowds.”

Associated Press added that the female president has “promised a strong welfare state.”

Independent journalist Breanna Morello said Sheinbaum is a “socialist who will likely make our illegal alien crisis even worse.”

The current President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, wrote in a statement, “Today is a day of glory because the people of Mexico freely and democratically decided that Claudia Sheinbaum becomes the first female president in 200 years of independent life of our Republic.”

“Congratulations to all of us who have the joy of living in these stellar times of pride and transformation.”

Several leaders celebrated the leftist’s victory.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “Congratulations to Mexico’s president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, on a historic win.”

“Our free trade agreement is the envy of the world, and the result of a strong, mutually beneficial relationship,” he continued. “I look forward to strengthening that relationship with you to create more prosperity for Canadians and Mexicans alike.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) issued a similar statement of support. “Congratulations to Mexico’s next President, Claudia Sheinbaum!” he wrote on X.

“Looking forward to continuing our work together.”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also issued a celebratory statement for Sheinbaum.

“The United States congratulates Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic victory as Mexico’s first woman president. We also congratulate the people of Mexico for making their voices heard through the democratic process,” he said in a press statement. “I look forward to building on the strong U.S.-Mexico partnership with President-elect Sheinbaum.”

Blinken said that the United States “deeply value[s] our special relationship with Mexico that is based on shared democratic values, deep economic ties, and strong cultural and familial connections.”

“The United States is committed to working together with Mexico as neighbors, friends, and partners, to advance our mutual economic and security interests. I extend my best wishes to President-elect Sheinbaum and the people of Mexico.”
