World leaders have issued responses after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to implement tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China.
“Canada is essential to US domestic energy supply and last year 60 percent of US crude oil imports originated in Canada. We will of course continue to discuss these issues with the incoming administration,” Canadian officials said in a statement, as per The Guardian.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wrote on X: “The incoming US @realDonaldTrump administration has valid concerns related to illegal activities at our shared border. We are calling on the federal government to work with the incoming administration to resolve these issues immediately, thereby avoiding any unnecessary tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S. Fortunately, the vast majority of Alberta’s energy exports to the U.S. are delivered through secure and safe pipelines which do not in any way contribute to these illegal activities at the border. As the largest exporter of oil and gas to the U.S., we look forward to working with the new administration to strengthen energy security for both the U.S. and Canada.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for a “Team Canada approach and response,” noting that a “25 per cent tariff would be devastating to workers and jobs in both Canada and the U.S.”
According to Bloomberg’s Brian Platt, “Shortly after Trump’s post, Trudeau contacted Trump and the two leaders spoke by phone. According to a source, they talked border security and it was a ‘constructive call.’ Trudeau pointed out that the issues at the Canadian border are minuscule compared to the US/Mexico border.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that to one tariff “will come another and so on until we put our common businesses at risk.”
According to reports, migrant caravans heading to the United States have also been halted in the aftermath of Trump’s tariff threats.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote on X, “Within hours of President Trump announcing a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum declares that no migrant caravans will reach the US Border. President Trump has promised to keep the tariffs in place ‘until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!'”
“Trump effect on full display.”
A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington said in an email statement to the Global Times: “About the issue of US tariffs on China, China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature. No one will win a trade war or a tariff war.”
