LA Governor Signs Extradition Warrant for Doctor Prescribing Abortion Pill

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R) signed an extradition warrant for a New York doctor providing abortion-inducing drugs to a Louisiana resident.

“[U]under the laws of this State, MARGARET D. CARPENTER stands CHARGED with the crime(s) of CRIMINAL ABORTION BY MEANS OF ABORTION-INDUCING DRUGS, and it has been represented, and it satisfactorily shown to me, that the accused was present in this State at the time of the commission of said crime, and fled from the justice of this State,” the extradition warrant says.

“I do hereby respectfully demand that the above-named fugitive from justice be arrested and secured,” the document adds.

Landry said in a statement, “This is about a case in which a minor in Louisiana got pregnant. This minor was excited to have a baby, and she was actually planning a gender reveal party. Her mom conspired with a New York doctor to get a chemical abortion pill in the mail and then forced that minor to take it.”

“There is only one right answer in this situation: the doctor must face extradition to Louisiana where she can stand trial, and justice will be served,” he added. “We owe that to the minor and to the innocent loss of life, and to the people of this state who stand by life overwhelmingly.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) said she will not sign Louisiana’s extradition order.

“New York officials, including the governor, are not at liberty to ignore interstate compacts and laws regarding extradition. As to the new law, a doctor prescribing these drugs and delivering them in our state is committing a crime. Masking their identity on a prescription bottle will not protect them,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in response to Hochul.
