King Charles III and Queen Camilla landed in the United States on Monday, marking the king and queen’s first visit since the late Queen Elizabeth visited in 2007. The visit comes after Washington, D.C. experienced a shooting event during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend.
Discussing the visit on Sunday, President Trump said, “I think it’s great, he’ll be very safe… the White House grounds are really safe. This area of not very many acres is really safe.”
“And he’ll be staying here, I believe he’s going to a couple of other locations because he’s here for a few days,” Trump added. “He’s a great guy. They called him and they are so looking forward to being here. We spoke this morning.”
“First Lady Melania Trump led the preparations for the State Visit, which will honor the longstanding and special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom as the American people mark 250 years of independence,” the White House said of the royals’ visit. “On the afternoon of Monday, April 27, the President and First Lady will greet Their Majesties when they arrive to the South Portico of the White House. The couples will then head to the State Floor where they will sit for tea in the Green Room.”
Queen Camilla and the First Lady will also participate in a Pass in Review ceremony as well as join American students for a “cross-cultural educational event at the White House Tennis Pavilion,” the White House said.
The visit was announced in March. “Melania and I are pleased to announce that Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, will visit the United States for a Historic State Visit from April 27-30th, which will include a beautiful Banquet Dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28th,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. “This momentous occasion will be even more special this year, as we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of our Great Country. I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect. It will be TERRIFIC!”
