Kathy Hochul Deploys National Guard in New York Subway System

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) announced a plan to deploy 750 National Guard members in an effort to combat crime.

“I’m redeploying nearly 1,000 members of the New York State Police, MTA Police, and MTA National Guard to conduct bag checks at the city’s busiest transits,” Hochul said.

The guardsmen will ensure that “weapons are not being brought in.”

Hochul added that “no one should worry that the person sitting next to them possesses a deadly weapon.”

Hochul previously deployed its National Guard to combat the state’s migrant surge.

The deployment signified an expansion of the state’s commitment to alleviate the ongoing asylum seeker and migrant crisis, with 250 National Guard personnel now assigned full-time to case management services.

The governor highlighted the crucial role of the National Guard members, stating, “Our National Guard members play a huge role in assisting in the process and we are grateful for their service.”

The increased deployment focuses on addressing the needs at asylum seeker sites primarily located in New York City.
