A forthcoming political book reveals that Vice President Kamala Harris‘ aides staged a practice dinner party in 2022 over concerns about her handling social engagements. The mock soirée, reportedly dry to avoid any mishaps involving alcohol, was organized prior to a private dinner hosted by media executive David Bradley in Washington, D.C.
According to “Original Sin,” a new book by Alex Thompson and Jake Tapper set for release on May 20, the rehearsal was intended to help Harris navigate the social dynamics of an elite “salon-style” dinner. Though the actual event reportedly went smoothly, the preparation underscored internal doubts about her ability to engage effectively in high-level social settings.
The authors depict Harris as a persistent challenge for the White House, describing her reluctance to take on demanding political tasks and even declining invitations to appear at prominent Washington events, such as the Gridiron Club dinner. White House insiders reportedly criticized her lack of initiative and personal rapport, with some expressing regret over her vice-presidential selection in 2020. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was reportedly a finalist for the position, was seen by several Biden staffers as the more capable choice.
The book also details concerns among President Biden’s staff following his 2023 fall at the Air Force Academy. Aides reportedly considered the possibility of using a wheelchair if he had remained in office after another term. Biden’s physician, Kevin O’Connor, privately noted that another significant fall could result in a prolonged and difficult recovery, further complicating the president’s public appearances and mobility.
