Kaepernick Still Wants to Play in NFL After Comparing to Slavery

Former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who left the NFL in 2016, announced he was looking for a possible comeback, despite comparing the league to a slave auction.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Last fall, Kaepernick released a Netflix special in which he said the NFL’s draft and pre-draft workouts were similar to a slave trade.
  • The former San Francisco 49ers player claimed the NFL searches “for any defect that might affect your performance” and that teams “poke, prod and examine you” and have “No boundary respect.”
  • “What they don’t want you to understand is what’s being established is a power dynamic,” Kaepernick said in the special titled “Colin in Black and White.”
KAEPERNICK ON THE LESSON WHITES SHOULD LEARN:

“Part of what the show speaks to is how whiteness shows up… and how we engage with it… but also the pressures, the microaggressions, the racism, and what that shows up as.”

BACKGROUND:
  • Despite criticizing the league that has profited him millions of dollars, the quarterback says he is still training and ready to play again, saying he will publicly expose the NFL if they continue to deny him.
  • “You’re gonna have to continue to deny me and do so in a public way,” Kaepernick said. “And you’re gonna expose yourself by that, but it won’t be because I’m not ready or not prepared.”
