New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing in President-elect Donald Trump’s business records case.
Sentencing was initially to occur in July but was postponed until November 26. Previous reports indicated that the case was adjourned.
“It is HEREBY ORDERED, that Defendant’s request for leave to file a motion to dismiss pursuant to Criminal Procedure Law … is GRANTED,” the court document reads, adding that it is further “ORDERED that the joint application for a stay of sentencing is GRANTED to the extent that the November 26, 2024 date is adjourned.”
On November 19, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told Judge Juan Merchan to postpone the sentencing.
“The People deeply respect the Office of the President, are mindful of the demands and obligations of the presidency and acknowledge that Defendant’s inauguration will raise unprecedented legal questions,” prosecutors wrote. “We also deeply respect the fundamental role of the jury in our constitutional system.”
