In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, podcast host Joe Rogan and X/Twitter owner Elon Musk delved into the platform’s Community Notes feature, hailing it as a groundbreaking tool for combating misinformation. The discussion follows Rogan’s October endorsement of President Trump for the 2024 election during an interview with the former president. Vice President Kamala Harris declined a similar invitation to appear on Rogan’s show.
Rogan expressed his appreciation for Community Notes, a feature that allows users to fact-check posts using sourced information and community votes to verify accuracy. “Community Notes is the best. It’s awesome. It’s incredible because everybody gets checked,” Rogan said, contrasting it with traditional fact-checking, which he criticized for being biased and often unsourced.
Elon Musk highlighted the transparency and open-source nature of the feature. “The counter to misinformation is better information,” Musk stated. He explained that the software and data behind Community Notes are entirely open-source, allowing users to independently verify the process. Musk emphasized that he does not interfere with notes, even on his own account, saying, “Everything is totally open. If I did [remove a note], it would stick out like a sore thumb immediately.”
Rogan agreed, praising the system for its fairness and transparency. “That is the best counter to misinformation,” Rogan said. “Let everybody look at it and say, ‘Okay, here’s what the actual facts say.’”
Community Notes has gained attention for its ability to hold users on all sides of the political spectrum accountable. The Gateway Pundit has reported on numerous occasions where Community Notes debunked misinformation, often targeting claims from liberal accounts.
As misinformation continues to be a major concern on social media, Rogan and Musk’s discussion underscored the importance of transparency and crowd-sourced accountability in fostering a more informed online community.
