Actress Jean Smart has called on television networks to forego broadcasting live award shows and instead donate the proceeds to aid victims of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County. Smart, who recently won a Golden Globe, made her plea on Instagram, urging networks to prioritize relief efforts over televised celebrations.
The wildfires, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, have destroyed more than 1,900 structures and burned over 17,000 acres. At least five people have died, and more than 130,000 residents remain under evacuation orders as flames threaten homes and businesses across the region.
In response to the fires, several entertainment events have been postponed. The Critics Choice Awards, originally set for January 12, will now take place on January 26 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Other industry events, including announcements for the Academy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, have also been delayed.
Production for multiple television shows, such as The Price is Right and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has been paused, while Universal Studios halted filming for series including Hacks and Ted Lasso. Movie premieres for Unstoppable and Wolf Man were canceled due to safety concerns.
The fires have left a significant toll on the community, with thousands displaced and entire neighborhoods destroyed. Strong winds, which initially spread the flames rapidly, have subsided but remain a concern for firefighters. Relief efforts are ongoing, but officials warn that the damage and evacuations could increase as new fires emerge.
Smart’s appeal to networks underscores the entertainment industry’s role in supporting affected communities. As Hollywood adjusts its schedule, the focus remains on providing aid and rebuilding amidst one of the region’s most destructive fire seasons in recent years.
