Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned claims that Elon Musk is a threat to democracy, instead stating that George Soros threatens state sovereignty due to his involvement in global affairs.
When asked during a press conference if Musk’s criticism of European leaders constituted “dangerous interference” in politics, Meloni said, as per TV5Monde, “The problem is (rather) when rich people use their resources to fund parties and associations, as well as politicians, around the world to influence the political choices of states.”
“That’s not what Musk does. Elon Musk financed an election campaign in his country, for his candidate, in a country where, I note in passing, this is quite common,” she explained. “But, as far as I know, Elon Musk does not fund parties, associations or politicians around the world.”
“This is what George Soros is doing, for example. And yes, I consider this [Soro’s funding] to be a dangerous interference in the affairs of states and their sovereignty,” Meloni said. “Is the problem that Elon Musk has influence and is rich, or is he not on the left?”
Meloni was recently named Europe’s most powerful person by Politico.
“Indeed, since her election in 2022, the Italian prime minister has introduced policies on issues like migration and LGBTQ+ rights that would once have drawn condemnation from Brussels,” Politico wrote. “Instead, the reaction from European Union leaders has ranged from indifference to approval, with many accepting Meloni as the palatable representative of the ever-more-radical zeitgeist blossoming on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Earlier this month, President-elect Donald Trump told reporters that Meloni is “a fantastic woman.”
“She’s really taken Europe by storm, and everyone else, and we’re just having dinner tonight,” he said upon Meloni’s visit to Mar-a-Lago.
