NBC News justice and intelligence correspondent Ken Dilanian discussed growing concerns regarding ISIS-inspired radicals and far-right extremism during a report on the deadly New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans. The attack, which took place on Bourbon Street, killed 15 and injured at least 30. Dilanian highlighted the increasing risks associated with terrorist threats, especially in the wake of global tensions, including the controversy surrounding the war in Gaza.
Host Lester Holt pointed out the ISIS flag found on the trailer hitch of the vehicle involved in the attack, remarking on the disturbing implications of such a symbol being associated with a domestic terror incident. Dilanian noted that the FBI and other counterterrorism officials have been warning for some time that the threat from ISIS-inspired attacks is more pronounced than it has been in years, particularly following the rise of tensions in the Middle East after October 7. He pointed out the growing radicalization in the U.S., where individuals are increasingly turning to extremist ideologies—whether that be from ISIS, far-right extremism, or political violence spurred by various grievances, such as anger at healthcare executives.
Dilanian emphasized that the situation is precarious, with a confluence of risk factors contributing to the heightened threat level. Counterterrorism officials are deeply concerned about the increase in domestic violence inspired by both international and homegrown radical movements, underscoring the importance of remaining vigilant as we move into 2025.
