Interns at Progressive News Outlet Criticize Harris Endorsement

Interns for The Nation, a progressive publication, have criticized its September 23 endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.

At the time of the endorsement, The Nation wrote, “Of course we endorse Harris over Trump. But we also endorse Harris in her own right, as an experienced and capable leader with a vision for America’s future that—while not as progressive as we might prefer, particularly when it comes to foreign policy—represents a clear advance on the Democratic presidential nominees of the past half-century.”

The publication added that Harris “demonstrates an awareness of the need not merely to build on the many successes of the Biden-Harris administration but to go farther in the pursuit of economic, social, and racial justice—and the preservation of our planet.”

The Nation’s interns, however, called the endorsement “unearned and disappointing.”

According to the interns, Harris is complicit in “genocide.”

“In the 12 weeks since she effectively became the Democratic nominee, Harris has failed to differentiate her policies from Joe Biden’s blank-check support for genocide,” the interns wrote. “Instead, she repeats the same bland pronouncements about the need for a ceasefire and uses the same passive-voice support for the idea of Palestinian ‘freedom and self-determination.'”

“Harris’s plans to relieve the housing crisis in the United States ring hollow next to her support for Israel’s destruction of homes in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon,” the interns added.

The interns further condemn Harris’s lack of pro-Palestinian rhetoric and action, going on to declare that they “reject the idea that democracy will be safe under a Harris administration.”

“When we think of her, we do not think of the redemption of American democracy,” they wrote.
