Illinois Memorial Day Wall Honors Fallen Heroes

The Memorial Day 2025 Wall of Remembrance is now on display at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, offering a powerful tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. Unveiled by Illinois Senate Republicans on Thursday, the display features photos and remembrances that cycle on a large screen in the Capitol rotunda.

State Sen. Jason Plummer, R-Edwardsville, a U.S. Navy Reserve officer, called the tribute a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by America’s heroes. “This powerful tribute honors the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country,” Plummer said.

State Sen. Li Arellano, R-Dixon, an Army Engineers staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves who served on combat tours in the Middle East, emphasized the importance of remembering the families left behind. “For me and for many soldiers, it’s also about honoring and respecting the families who lost those veterans,” Arellano said. “As we commemorate Memorial Day, I ask you to join me in remembering and honoring our fallen brothers and sisters who gave everything so that we might live in freedom.”

State Sen. Craig Wilcox, R-McHenry, a retired Air Force colonel, shared his own connection to the cause. Wilcox, who served 24 years in the Air Force and lost a service member under his command, reminded the public that Memorial Day is more than just the start of summer. “It is a sacred time to pause and to remember and to reflect on the cost of our freedom,” Wilcox said.

Illinoisans were encouraged to submit photos and written remembrances of loved ones who died in service. The Wall of Remembrance is open to the public during regular Capitol business hours and will remain on display through June.
