Canada is preparing for a significant increase in illegal immigration due to recent policy changes implemented by the Trump administration. Professor Kelly Sundberg from Mount Royal University warns that the country may face a “tsunami” of illegal immigrants fleeing stricter U.S. border enforcement.
Sundberg highlighted that many migrants, fearing arrest or deportation under President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies, are seeking refuge in Canada. He expressed concern that Canada could be “overwhelmed by the illegal immigrants fleeing American authorities,” potentially bringing guns and drugs into the country.
The professor pointed to President Trump’s decision to deport thousands of “criminal illegal aliens” to Guantánamo Bay as a catalyst for increased migration northward. This action has heightened concerns about the smuggling of fentanyl and other illicit substances into Canada.
An anonymous Mexican cartel member corroborated these observations, noting a rise in migrants seeking passage through the U.S. into Canada. “Most of them are Venezuelans,” the cartel member stated. “Those people are afraid of being deported to their countries.” He reported that previously, out of every 30 people smuggled, three or four would head to Canada; now, the number has increased to five out of every ten.
The Canadian border has come under increased scrutiny following reports of traffickers advertising services to smuggle illegal immigrants into the U.S. through the northern border. Additionally, President Trump has criticized Canada for its perceived failure to secure its border and prevent fentanyl smuggling into the U.S., leading to the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, with threats of additional tariffs on all Canadian products.
In February, the first full month of President Trump’s second term, illegal border crossings into the U.S. dropped to a record low of 8,326 apprehensions, a 96% decrease from the peak numbers reported in December 2023.
President Trump’s decisive actions to secure the U.S. border are forcing Canada to deal with the reality of unchecked migration. If Canadian leaders refuse to implement stronger enforcement measures, their country risks becoming a haven for illegal immigrants, drug smugglers, and criminals who can no longer exploit America’s open borders.
