Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) publicly celebrated Democrat Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, calling it an “incredible victory” and thanking voters for rejecting “bigots and corrupt billionaires.” Omar’s praise has reignited concerns over Mamdani’s far-left politics and close alignment with Democratic Socialists of America.
Posting on X, Omar congratulated Mamdani and wrote, “Thank you NYC for not letting the bigots and corrupt billionaires prevail. This victory also belongs to you.” She concluded her message with “Alhamdulillah,” an Arabic phrase meaning “All praise is due to Allah.”
Though Mamdani leads in the primary, the final outcome will be determined by New York City’s ranked-choice voting system. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams have already acknowledged Mamdani’s lead.
Mamdani, a New York State Assemblyman, is the son of acclaimed film director Mira Nair and was raised in a life of privilege. Despite this, he has positioned himself as a voice for socialist causes. Critics accuse him of altering his speaking style to appeal to different voter groups and of using performative tactics rooted in his background in film and media.
Omar’s praise for Mamdani comes as other Democrats voice concern. Mayor Adams has labeled Mamdani “a snake oil salesman” and declared him “too extreme to lead” New York City. Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) echoed these concerns, while more moderate Democrats fear Mamdani’s rise could alienate working-class voters.
Despite backlash, Mamdani enjoys the backing of progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). His campaign has relied on left-wing messaging and anti-establishment rhetoric, positioning himself as a radical departure from traditional Democrat leadership.
Mayor Adams, now running as an independent, continues to campaign on a platform of practical governance and support for working families. “Our city needs independent leadership that understands working people,” Adams stated.
