House Votes Unanimously to Create Task Force Investigating Assassination Attempt

The House of Representatives voted unanimously to create a task force investigating the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The effort received 416 votes in favor, with 0 against.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said in a joint statement, “The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter.”

“The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”

According to House Resolution 1367, the task force will “investigate and fully examine all actions by any agency, Department, officer, or employee of the Federal Government, as well as State and local law enforcement or any other State or local government or private entities or individuals.”

The task force’s findings must be reported by December 13, 2024.

In a statement on social media, Johnson wrote, “The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response, @RepJeffries and I are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter.”

“The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again,” he added.

Rep. Mike Kelley (R-PA), who introduced the resolution, said that the legislation’s goals are to “investigate, detail, and explain the shooting and security breakdowns that tragically killed one person, injured two others, and nearly claimed President Trump’s life. We must never let something like this happen again.” He explained that it is “important that we don’t jump to any conclusions as we begin these investigations. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get the American people the answers they deserve.”
