Four House Democrats traveled to El Salvador last week to advocate for a deported illegal migrant linked to MS-13 — all while staying in a luxury hotel with panoramic views and upscale amenities, the Daily Caller News Foundation confirmed.
Democratic Reps. Maxwell Frost (Florida), Robert Garcia (California), Maxine Dexter (Oregon), and Yassamin Ansari (Arizona) visited San Salvador on April 21 to push for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a reputed MS-13 gang member. While championing the suspected criminal, the lawmakers stayed at the Hilton San Salvador, a five-star hotel offering volcano views, a scenic terrace, and fine dining, according to Hotels.com.
House Republicans blasted the trip. “While the American people suffer the consequences of the Biden Border Crisis, these Democrats demonstrated again they are completely out of touch with voters,” said National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ben Petersen.
Despite appearing to post videos from their hotel rooms, none of the Democrats acknowledged their luxurious accommodations. Frost filmed an Instagram video from the Hilton’s outdoor area. Dexter posted from a terrace matching the hotel’s wedding venue space. Garcia recorded interviews in a room resembling those shown on hotel booking websites.
The trip, self-financed by some of the lawmakers after the House Oversight Committee denied taxpayer funding, ended without them meeting Abrego Garcia. Reports described their effort as “chaotic” and “pointless,” with accusations they were seeking campaign footage rather than genuine diplomacy.
Despite Abrego Garcia’s alleged involvement in human trafficking and violent gang activity, Frost pledged more Democrat visits to El Salvador. “We won’t be the last members of Congress here,” Frost said.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries deflected questions about the trip, instead pivoting to attacks on President Trump.
Abrego Garcia remains under El Salvador’s jurisdiction, and the Trump administration argues the U.S. cannot legally intervene, reinforcing its commitment to law, order, and national security.
