Hegseth Updates Warfighting with AI Military Platform

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that the military now has an artificial intelligence platform. The platform, called GenAI.mil, puts the “world’s most powerful frontier AI models, starting with Google Gemini, directly into the hands of every American warrior,” Hegseth said.

The AI models on the platform “can be utilized to conduct deep research, format documents, and even analyze video or imagery at unprecedented speed,” he said, adding, “We will continue to aggressively field the world’s best technology to make our fighting force more lethal than ever before.”

All of the models are American made, Hegseth noted.

“There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance,” said Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael. “We are moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce. AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”

The platform’s launch honors American ingenuity, the War Department explained in a press release, emphasizing that the Department’s Office of Research & Engineering’s success on the development “directly embodies the Department’s core tenets of reviving the warrior ethos, rebuilding American military capabilities, and re-establishing deterrence through technological dominance and uncompromising grit.”

GenAI.mil’s launch aligns with the Department’s focus on six critical areas to bolster the nation’s military. These areas are Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI), Biomanufacturing (BIO), Contested Logistics Technologies (LOG), Quantum and Battlefield Information Dominance (Q-BID), Scaled Directed Energy (SCADE), and Scaled Hypersonics (SHY), each of which will address challenges presented on the battlefield.
