Gov. Ralph Northam Blames Drivers for Getting Stuck Overnight on I-95

Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam pointed blame at motorists who were stuck at a standstill in freezing temperatures on I-95.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Following the massive gridlock leaving hundreds stranded in their cars along a stretch of highway I-95, Ralph Northam said more should have been done by these motorists to stay off the roads.
  • “We gave warnings, and people need to pay attention to these warnings, and the less people that are on the highways when these storms hit, the better,” Northam said.
  • “I feel for these people that are stranded but just want to let them know we’re doing everything we can to get to them in a very challenging situation.”
  • Drivers had a different story and were adamant that the emergency was not their fault, the Washington Post reported.
  • Users took to Twitter to express their complaints towards Northam, reiterating that his statements were falling on deaf ears and not an excuse for the suffering the motorists endured.
  • “You failed, Governor. This is what you’ll be remembered for. The beginning and the end is what people remember the most. THAT part you should care about,” one user tweeted. “Clearly you don’t care about the people who were stuck in this terrible situation.”
WHAT MOTORISTS SAID:

“In a world today when everybody’s got their cellphones with them, there was no information, there was nothing. If they were able to send an alert out this morning, why couldn’t they do that Yesterday?” STRANDED MOTORIST Ronni Schorr said.

BACKGROUND:
  • A massive tractor-trailer crash on I-95 left hundred stranded in their cars overnight along a 50-mile stretch in Virginia on Monday.
  • ABC News Reported that both directions of traffic became gridlocked as the crashed vehicles blocked the road and snowy conditions prevented crews from reaching the drivers.
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation tweeted that crews were working around the clock Tuesday to clear the road but continued to ask drivers to avoid the I-95 with most roads having little to no visibility.
