GOP Report Details Making America Healthy Again

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) released a report describing the path to making the United States healthy.

Roy said the report, called “The Case for Healthcare Freedom,” is a “roadmap for how Congressional Republicans can help President Trump deliver on the promise to address America’s health crisis.”

“The problem isn’t just health insurance, or Big Pharma, or food additives that are making us unhealthy; it’s the fact that politicians, bureaucrats and corporations are all benefitting from a broken, cronyistic system that lets them put profits over patients with impunity,” he said. “Right now, Congress has a tremendous opportunity to put American healthcare back on track by embracing the empowerment of patients and doctors through the promotion of expansive health savings accounts in the budget reconciliation process, and we need to take full advantage. Giving the same actors more power and money won’t work; if we want to Make America Healthy Again, the answer is healthcare freedom. If we want to control our budgets and healthcare spending, the answer is healthcare freedom.”

Some of the report’s findings include healthcare spending reaching $4.9 trillion in 2023, millions of dollars spent on the promotion of obesity drugs, and the expenses of Obamacare.

“Our current healthcare system is neither free nor competitive. It is government-regulated, government-funded, Big Insurance-managed ‘care’ resulting in a broken system on the brink of fully government-run healthcare. Half measures by Republicans will not save us from this disaster,” the report says.

“This is the opportunity for Republican leadership today. We have the power – and the duty – to deliver transformative solutions for all Americans through healthcare freedom, and we must embrace this particular moment to deliver it, because if we aren’t in control of our own health, are we even free?”

In proposing what healthcare freedom may look like, the report says, “Instead of getting an insurance plan chosen for you by your employer, you could have your employer contribute to your HSA – where your employer could still receive a tax deduction for their contribution.”

“Then, you could buy a health coverage and care plan that is best for you and your family. You could decide to buy a health insurance policy similar to your current policy or could opt to get a catastrophic health plan with a DPC plan for your day-to-day health needs,” it reads. “Under this model, the freedom to choose your health coverage needs would be yours, and the tax incentives would work for you no matter what you choose.”

The report goes on to discuss deregulating the insurance markets, arguing that current regulations “prevent consumers from getting portable, affordable, personalized healthcare coverage.”

The report comes as “Make America Healthy Again” was a central focus of President Donald Trump’s campaign.
