Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) has passed away at the age of 65. His death drops the House Republican majority to 218-213.
According to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a medical emergency occurred on January 5. “Upon arrival at Enloe Hospital, Congressman LaMalfa was taken into emergency surgery. Congressman LaMalfa passed away during the surgical procedure,” the sheriff’s office said.
Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the House Majority Whip, confirmed LaMalfa’s death and expressed his sorrow over the matter. “Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” Emmer wrote on X. “Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also expressed his condolences. “Congress is devastated to learn this morning about the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Doug LaMalfa,” he wrote on social media. “Doug was a lifelong resident of northern California and deeply loved its people. He was as fierce of a fighter for his state’s vast natural resources and beauty as we have ever known. We are mourning the loss of our friend and brother today and we send our respects for his life and work to his wife Jill and the LaMalfa family during this difficult time.” Johnson then quoted Romans 8:38-39.
Speaking to House Republicans at the Trump Kennedy Center, President Trump said the nation has experienced “tremendous sorrow” over the death of great, great, great member” of Congress.
“He was the leader of the Western caucus, a fierce champion on California water issues,” Trump added. “He was great on water. He wanted to release the water.”
President Trump went on to describe LaMalfa’s loyalty and support. “You know, he voted with me 100% of the time,” he said. “With Doug, I never had to call. He was with us right from the beginning.”
