A former aide to Jill Biden, Anthony Bernal, took the Fifth Amendment before a congressional committee when asked to answer questions relating to former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.
“This week new reporting confirms President Biden’s aides took unauthorized executive actions during his presidency amid his cognitive decline. It’s no surprise that Anthony Bernal is pleading the Fifth Amendment to shield himself from criminal liability,” House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said in a statement.
“During his deposition today, Mr. Bernal pleaded the Fifth when asked if any unelected official or family members executed the duties of the President and if Joe Biden ever instructed him to lie about his health,” Comer said. “This is a historic scandal and Americans demand transparency and accountability. We will continue to pursue the truth on their behalf and examine options to get the answers we need.”
Comer was only able to ask two questions to Bernal, the New York Post reported. These questions were: “Was Joe Biden fit to exercise the duties of the president?” and “Did any unelected official or family member execute the duties of the presidency?”
“I think that the American people are concerned,” the congressman said. “They’re concerned that there were people making decisions in the White House that were not only unelected but no one to this day knows who they were.”
Bernal is the second person to plead the Fifth in the investigation surrounding Biden’s decline. Former White House physician Kevin O’Connor pleaded the Fifth Amendment last week and asserted doctor-patient privilege.
