FBI Director Christopher Wray is weighing whether he should resign before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated, according to a report from The Washington Times.
“He’s going to be gone at the inauguration. On or before the inauguration,” a source told the outlet. Sources further said that Wray may quit because “he doesn’t want to get fired,” The Times reported.
Should Wray depart, Deputy Director Paul Abbate will become acting director and appoint an acting deputy director.
The possible resignation comes as Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) sent Wray a letter condemning his “failed” leadership, urging him to depart from the FBI.
“For the good of the country, it’s time for you and your deputy to move on to the next chapter in your lives. I’ve spent my career fighting for transparency, and I’ve always called out those in government who have fought against it,” Grassley wrote. “For the public record, I must do so once again now.”
“I therefore must express my vote of no confidence in your continued leadership of the FBI,” he wrote. “President-elect Trump has already announced his intention to nominate a candidate to replace you, and the Senate will carefully consider that choice.”
Grassley further wrote on X, “In his 7yrs as FBI Dir Chris Wray has allowed the bureau [to be] politicized [and] repeatedly refused [to] answer to Congress & protect whistleblowers Time [to] turn the page on Dir Wray & Deputy Dir Abbate’s failed leadership IVE SEEN ENOUGH.”
Trump nominated Kash Patel for FBI Director, calling him a “brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People. He played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability, and the Constitution.”
“Kash did an incredible job during my First Term, where he served as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council. Kash has also tried over 60 jury trials. This FBI will end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the Border. Kash will work under our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to bring back Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity to the FBI,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
