European Union Pauses Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S.

The European Union announced that it will pause its tariff countermeasures against the United States for 90 days.

“We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X. “While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days. If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table.”

President Donald Trump announced on April 9 that he was pausing tariffs for 90 days on “more than 75 countries” while raising the tariffs on China to 125%.

“[B]ased on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately,” Trump said. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Prior to Trump’s announcement, the EU planned to impose countermeasures beginning April 15. “The EU considers US tariffs unjustified and damaging, causing economic harm to both sides, as well as the global economy,” the EU said after holding a vote for the countermeasure proposal. “The EU has stated its clear preference to find negotiated outcomes with the US, which would be balanced and mutually beneficial.”
