Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen released a joint statement condemning the onslaught of migrants entering Europe.
The statement, released through a Facebook post, sought to defend Europe’s “values and our way of life.”
“We are aware that many may wonder about our collaboration. We come from very different political positions and we certainly do not agree on everything,” the statement reads. “We are the only two women who head a government in the EU. One of us leads a large country in the South; the other, a small country in the North. But we are united by our desire to defend Europe. We do not accept uncontrolled immigration to Europe, and we have promoted a strict migration policy, both in our nations and in Europe.”
The leaders noted that illegal immigration has led to “rising crime rates, increasing pressure on public services, and eroding citizen trust.”
The statement later pivoted to emphasizing the importance of respecting European values and its Christian heritage. “We are both proud of Europe’s Christian cultural heritage and want to protect it. We expect those who come to our countries and choose to make Europe their home, to respect our values and not try to impose on us models of life that we do not share,” the leaders said. “We believe that this is the right way to protect Europe and our common values. And we believe that millions of Europeans share this belief.”
