Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, alleging that the companies have engaged in monopolistic activities.
“This is a tale of two monopolists joining forces to ensure their continued dominance in a world rapidly driven by the most powerful technology humanity has ever created: artificial intelligence (‘AI’),” the lawsuit reads. “Working in tandem, Defendants Apple and OpenAI have locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.”
“Generative AI chatbots improve their models based on a continuous feedback loop. More users beget more prompts, and more prompts offer more opportunities to train the model, whose better features then attract even more users,” it adds. “As a result of Apple and OpenAI’s exclusive arrangement, ChatGPT is the only generative AI chatbot that benefits from billions of user prompts originating from hundreds of millions of iPhones. This makes it hard for competitors of ChatGPT’s generative AI chatbot and super apps powered by generative AI chatbots to scale and innovate.”
Earlier this month, Musk accused Apple of deliberately boosting OpenAI’s ChatGPT app rankings over his own AI platform.
OpenAI filed a lawsuit against Musk in April, arguing that he tried to “harm” the company.
While Musk helped to launch OpenAI, his involvement was “short-lived,” the lawsuit states, adding that the Tesla CEO “could not tolerate seeing such success for an enterprise he had abandoned and declared doomed. He made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead—not for humanity but for Elon Musk.”
