President Trump announced that Ed Martin will be leaving his position in the Trump administration to work on legal efforts surrounding the midterm election.
“Ed Martin has been with me from the very beginning, and done an incredible job as an Attorney, Director of the Weaponization Working Group, and the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Ed is now leaving to go outside to fight Legal Battles for the upcoming Midterm Election, and the Presidential Election of 2028. I know he will do an outstanding job, ensure Free, Fair, and Honest Elections, and strongly advance our Constitutional Rights. Good luck Ed!”
Martin served as the U.S. Pardon Attorney since May 2025. In that role, he launched an investigation into former President Joe Biden’s autopen signatures for the clemency granted to his family members and death row inmates. He was also named by Trump to serve as the Director of the Weaponization Working Group for the Department of Justice. Prior to these roles, Martin served as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he “led the office responsible for prosecuting local and federal cases in the nation’s capital,” the DOJ said.
In 2025, President Trump moved to pull Martin’s nomination for D.C. U.S. Attorney after a key Republican said he would not support Martin.
“He’s a terrific person,” Trump said of Martin. “He wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought. He’s done a very good job. Crime is down 25% in DC.”
“I have to be straight. I was disappointed. A lot of people were disappointed. But that’s the way it works sometimes,” Trump added. “That’s the way it works. And he wasn’t rejected, but we felt it would be very — it would be hard. And we have somebody else that we’ll be announcing over the next two days who’s going to be great.”
