The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, announced the cancellation of 239 federal contracts over a two-day period, aiming to reduce government spending and eliminate wasteful projects.

NIH Grants on Gender and Sexual Identity Defunded

On Tuesday, DOGE revealed that NIH had scrapped several controversial grants, including:

  • $699,000 for studying cannabis use among “sexual minority gender diverse individuals.”
  • $620,000 for an “LGB+ inclusive teen pregnancy prevention program for transgender boys.”
  • $225,000 for a University of Colorado study on the “effects of hormones on headaches in transmasculine adolescents.”

USDA Ends Funding for “Food Justice” Grant

On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the cancellation of a $379,000 USDA grant in the San Francisco Bay Area designed to educate queer, trans, and BIPOC urban farmers on “food justice” and “values-aligned markets.” Rollins defended the decision, stating:

“By stopping this wasteful spending here at USDA, we are ending identity politics, and we are refocusing our agency on its core mission of supporting American farming, ranching and forestry.”

Broader Impact of DOGE’s Budget Cuts

DOGE’s aggressive contract cancellations align with President Donald Trump’s efforts to rein in federal spending and eliminate programs deemed wasteful or politically driven. The administration estimates that these terminations will save taxpayers approximately $2.7 billion.

Supporters of DOGE’s measures argue that these steps are necessary to curtail unnecessary government spending and refocus resources on essential services. Critics, however, contend that eliminating DEI programs could undermine efforts to promote inclusivity and address systemic disparities.

DOGE’s aggressive approach to contract cancellations reflects the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility. As the debate continues, the long-term effects of these actions on government operations and societal equity remain to be seen.
