Disney Claims Tinker Bell, Captain Hook Could Be ‘Potentially Problematic’ for Stereotypes

The Walt Disney Company has labeled famous characters Tinker Bell and Captain Hook as “potentially problematic” for certain stereotypes.

QUICK FACTS:
  • According to Disney’s “Stories Matter” initiative aimed at adding disclaimers to classic movies with “negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures,” the two characters have raised noteworthy concerns, Breitbart reported.
  • The team claimed Tinker Bell was problematic because she was “body conscious” and jealous of Peter Pan.
  • Captain Hook, according to Stories Matter, was discriminatory against those with disabilities because he is portrayed to be a villain.
DISNEY’S STATEMENT ON CLASSIC MOVIES CONTAINING CERTAIN CHARACTERS:

“These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.”

BACKGROUND:
  • In addition, Disney+ has also added social justice trigger warnings to some of its titles, claiming that classic movies such as Dumbo and Lady and the Tramp may include “outdated cultural depictions.”
  • “This program is presented as originally created,” the warning says. “It may contain outdated cultural depictions.”
  • Once the Stories Matter team flags certain characters, they eventually pass on the findings to senior Disney leaders.
