DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Believes Southern Border is Not a ‘Disaster’

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified that the crisis at the southern border is not a “disaster.”

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) asked Mayorkas, “So the situation at the border, you’re saying, is not a disaster?”

Mayorkas responded, “That is correct.”

The statement comes as there were 2.4 million migrant apprehensions at the southern border, according to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“In response to high rates of encounters across the southwest border in September, CBP surged resources and personnel. We are continually engaging with domestic and foreign partners to address historic hemispheric migration, including large migrant groups traveling on freight trains, and to enforce consequences including by preparing for direct repatriations to Venezuela,” said Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner.

“CBP will continue to remain vigilant, making operational adjustments as necessary and enforcing consequences under U.S. immigration law. The supplemental funding request announced yesterday would provide critically needed additional resources including additional CBP agents and officers to support our essential missions: from border and migration management, to countering fentanyl and keeping dangerous drugs out of our communities,” he stated.

On October 18, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter to Mayorkas, urging him to address terrorist-linked illegal immigrants.

“Illegal aliens with potential ties to terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah have no place in the United States. In the wake of Hamas’s attack on Israel, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is already alerting Americans about an elevated number of violent threats against civilians, including antisemitic threats,” wrote Hawley. “It is therefore critical that you abandon your radical open border policies, and instead, take immediate action to secure the border.”
