A new report has revealed that a Department of Homeland Security official has been actively encouraging illegal immigration through social media platforms. Wilson Osorio, who serves as an associate counsel with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, has been using TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram to share interviews with undocumented migrants and offer guidance on the migration process, according to the conservative watchdog group American Accountability Foundation.
The report highlights Osorio’s efforts to showcase the experiences of individuals who have entered the U.S. illegally, with discussions about their earnings, how they navigated the journey, and their success stories after arriving in the country. For instance, in one Instagram post, Osorio shared a video featuring a Honduran migrant who entered the U.S. illegally two decades ago and now owns a thriving restaurant generating over $1 million in revenue.
Since July, Osorio has shared numerous videos across social media, although his LinkedIn profile and some of his accounts, including TikTok and YouTube, have reportedly been made private after the report surfaced. In one video, Osorio discussed the dangers of crossing the border, with a migrant advising potential border crossers about the perils of smugglers and the harsh conditions of the desert.
Several other videos highlight success stories of undocumented migrants receiving work permits or gaining citizenship, including one individual who benefitted from amnesty granted under former President Reagan’s administration. Osorio also shared stories of how migrants working in construction and other industries have been able to support themselves financially in the U.S.
Under the Biden administration, over 7.8 million individuals have entered the U.S. illegally, and according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, more than 13,000 migrants convicted of murder remain at large within the country.
Thomas Jones, president of the American Accountability Foundation, condemned Osorio’s actions, accusing him of promoting a “radical open borders agenda” that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of Americans. Jones called for Osorio’s immediate termination from his taxpayer-funded position.
