DeSantis Uses ‘Gulf of America’ in Executive Order

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis used the “Gulf of America” in an executive order.

The use of the phrase comes amid President Donald Trump’s order to restore names honoring America’s heritage.

“The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past,” the order says.

Sites noted in the order include Mount McKinley and the Gulf of America. The Secretary of the Interior has 30 days to update documents to reflect the names.

“The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America,” the order adds.

DeSantis issued an executive order highlighting the name “Gulf of America.”

“WHEREAS, an area of low pressure moving across the Gulf of America, interacting with Arctic air, will bring widespread impactful winter weather to North Florida beginning Tuesday, January 21, 2025…” the order begins. The order pertains to weather conditions and winter storm warnings.

Earlier this month, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a bill that recognizes the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The bill says that “any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the ‘Gulf of America.’”
