Democratic Senate Candidate John Fetterman Struggles To Speak During Debate With Dr. Oz

Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate hopeful John Fetterman struggled to form coherent sentences in debate against Republican Dr. Oz.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Pennsylvania Democratic Senate Candidate John Fetterman struggled to make coherent sentences during Tuesday night’s debate with opponent Dr. Oz.
  • Fetterman, who suffered a stroke just five months ago, found it difficult to speak at times — missing words and pausing awkwardly throughout the event.
  • “Roe v. Wade for me is should be the law,” Fetterman said about the abortion topic.
  • “I do support fracking and I don’t, I don’t — I support fracking, and I stand, and I do support fracking,” the Democrat said mumbling words together.
MSNBC HOST JOE SCARBOROUGH ON FETTERMAN’S PERFORMANCE:

“John Fetterman’s ability to communicate is seriously impaired. Pennsylvania voters will be talking about the obvious fact even if many in the media will not. this is painful to watch regardless of one’s politics,” Scarborough said.

BACKGROUND:
  • Last week, Fetterman released a note from his doctor, Clifford Chen, who said that he “spoke intelligently without cognitive deficits” and that he “has no work restrictions and can work full duty in public office.”
  • Chen said that the candidate’s speaking was normal but “he continues to exhibit symptoms of an auditory processing disorder which can come across as hearing difficulty.”
  • American Faith reported in September 2022 that NBC News falsely claimed footage of John Fetterman struggling to speak during a rally to be “doctored” and urged social media companies to censor it.
  • The outlet accused one prominent conservative social media account of deceptively editing video of speeches to “create the perception that what he was saying was nonsensical.”
