Democrat Leader Rejects Efforts to Impeach Trump

Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (CA) criticized the efforts by some lawmakers to impeach President Donald Trump.

“Impeachment is, at times, a tool that can be used. This president is no stranger to that; he’s been impeached twice,” Aguilar told reporters, as per The Hill. “But we don’t have any confidence that House and Senate Republicans would do their jobs. And so this is not an exercise that we’re willing to undertake.”

“Right now, we will deal with the tools in front of us,” he said. “The policies that he and House Republicans have placed forward — which are reckless cuts to the health care system, to our supplemental nutrition that is relied on by women and children and families across this country — those are the policies that we’re going to push back against.” Aguilar noted the policies are the “items that the American public is paying attention to.”

The statement comes as Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Trump on Monday, accusing him of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Thanedar argued that Trump violated the Constitution in areas of taxpayer funds, deportation policies, tariffs, retaliation against the press, and more, further citing Trump’s decision to defy a Supreme Court ruling over the deportation of an illegal immigrant as the “final straw” for his impeachment push.

Similarly, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) announced in February that he introduced articles of impeachment against Trump. “Injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America,” he said at the time. “I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”

“I also rise to say that the impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down. The people have got to move forward. The people have to demand it,” Green declared. “And when the people demand it, it will be done.”
