Delta Plane Catches Fire in Latest Disaster

A Delta passenger jet departing from Orlando International Airport caught on fire. Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides.

The Airbus 330 was carrying 282 passengers, 10 flight attendants, and two pilots, CBS News reports. Evacuations occurred after flames were seen in one of the plane’s engines.

An Orlando airport spokesperson confirmed that the fire was “contained and is out.”

“We appreciate our customers’ cooperation and apologize for the experience,” Delta said in a statement. “Nothing is more important than safety and Delta teams will work to get our customers to their final destinations as soon as possible.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would launch an investigation into the matter.

The event is the latest incident to strike Delta. Last month, a Delta plane narrowly avoided a midair collision with a U.S. Air Force T-38 jet near Reagan Washington National Airport. After being cleared for takeoff, the aircraft received an onboard alert indicating another aircraft was in close proximity. Air traffic controllers quickly issued corrective instructions to both planes, averting disaster.

In February, passengers and crew aboard a Delta flight observed a haze filling the cabin. Upon returning to the airport, all 94 passengers, along with two pilots and three flight attendants, evacuated using emergency slides. Two passengers received medical attention on-site and were released.

Delta said at the time that “flight crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta when a haze inside the aircraft was observed after departure. Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize to our customers for the experience.”
